The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Abuja Branch, have agreed to deepen their collaboration to promote and protect the rights of women, children, and other vulnerable populations across the country.
This followed a courtesy visit by the FIDA Abuja delegation to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, April 24, 2025. The visit was aimed at strengthening partnerships and enhancing joint advocacy for improved access to justice and protection of human rights.
Speaking during the visit, representatives of FIDA Nigeria commended NHRC for its steadfast efforts in upholding human rights nationwide. They appealed to the Commission to encourage more of its female staff to join FIDA, noting that such engagement would deepen shared advocacy goals and service delivery.
The team also expressed interest in participating more actively in NHRC trainings, particularly those dealing with cases involving women, children, and other vulnerable groups. They emphasized that knowledge-sharing remains a key tool for impactful intervention.
A major concern raised during the meeting was the slow pace of justice delivery in the courts. To address this, FIDA proposed exploring possible interim measures in collaboration with NHRC to provide timely relief for victims pending the conclusion of formal court processes.
Responding on behalf of the Executive Secretary, the Director of Legal Services at NHRC,Rabi Auwalu Anwar,Esq, welcomed the FIDA team and acknowledged the synergy between both organizations. She reiterated the Commission’s commitment to its mandate and noted the existence of a dedicated department focused on the rights of women, children, and the vulnerable.
She assured the FIDA delegation of NHRC’s openness to partnership and support for all initiatives that seek to advance the cause of human rights in Nigeria. On the request for NHRC members to join FIDA, she affirmed that efforts would be made to encourage interested staff to sign up and participate actively.
The visit concluded with an exchange of materials between both parties FIDA presented a symbolic gift to NHRC, while the Commission shared its key publications and advocacy resources, signifying mutual respect and shared purpose.
Both organizations expressed optimism for a stronger partnership in their collective pursuit of justice, dignity, and equality for all.
