The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Roost Foundation and Headfort Foundations respectively, to deepen the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria.
At a ceremony to mark the official signing of the two MOUs in Abuja recently the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu Esq. stated that the Commission is inclined to collaborate with well-meaning Nigerians, MDAs, NGOs and CSOs to further the cause of human rights in the country.
The Chief Human Rights Officer in Nigeria expressed optimism that with the signing of the MOUs with the two organizations the Commission’s programmes and activities will further receive a boost since human rights protection is crosscutting and requires the collaboration of other stakeholders to achieve a better result.
In her remarks during the signing of the agreement, the Executive Director of Roost Foundation, Dame Julie Okah Donli expressed optimism that collaborating with the Commission will assist her organization to achieve more milestones in human rights protection in the country.
Earlier, Executive Director Roost Foundation had sought the collaboration of the Commission towards tackling the issue of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and human trafficking among others.
In her comments during the ceremony, the Representative of Headfort Foundation, Ms Oluyemi Orija said that collaboration with the Commission will further enable her organization to make more impact on the condition of indigent inmates at the Correctional Centres across the country.
She informed the Commission that her organization developed an on-line application (ONLINE APP) that enabled indigent victims of alleged police brutality to have access to a lawyer within seconds, so that their rights will be protected in accordance with the law.
