The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the unlawful arrest of Kebbi journalist, Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa, describing it as a blatant assault on press freedom.
Kangiwa was detained after exposing the poor state of Kangiwa General Hospital but later released with ₦200,000 compensation from the state government.
NHRC Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, welcomed the compensation but insisted Kebbi State must issue a public apology to fully comply with constitutional provisions.
He also hailed the suspension of Commissioner for Health, Yunusa Isma’il, over gross negligence, stressed that citizens’ rights to life and health must not be compromised.
“The Commission will continue to monitor the situation to ensure accountability. Press freedom is non-negotiable,” Ojukwu declared.
