The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has lauded the City of Houston, Texas, USA, for officially designating July 5 as “Ijaw Day,” describing the gesture as a landmark recognition of Nigeria’s cultural presence on the global stage.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, in a statement issued by the Commission, commended the Ijaw community in Houston for their advocacy, unity, and commitment that led to the historic proclamation.
She described the declaration as a proud moment not only for the Ijaw people and Bayelsa State but for Nigeria as a whole, adding that it reflects the growing impact of the Nigerian Diaspora and global appreciation of the country’s cultural identity.
“This milestone aligns with NiDCOM’s core mandate of deepening ties between Nigerians at home and abroad. It also reinforces the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting national pride beyond our borders,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
The NiDCOM boss emphasized that such recognitions open doors for enhanced collaboration between the Diaspora and subnational governments, particularly Bayelsa State, in harnessing the influence of Nigerians abroad for development.
She congratulated the Ijaw community and its leadership in Houston whose efforts made the recognition possible, reaffirming NiDCOM’s continued support for initiatives that promote the visibility and impact of Nigerian communities globally.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to facilitating platforms that celebrate Nigerian excellence and strengthen the country’s image internationally.
