The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has congratulated the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Abigail Marshall Katung, on her induction into the Maryam Babangida Nigerian Women Hall of Fame, describing it as a moment of pride for Nigeria and the global diaspora community.
The Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. (Dr.) Abike Dabiri-Erewa, lauded the achievement, saying it aligns perfectly with the Commission’s mandate of recognising and celebrating Nigerians abroad who continue to bring honour to the country through their outstanding accomplishments.
“Abigail Marshall Katung represents the kind of global excellence NiDCOM promotes. Her story is one of resilience, leadership and service. As the first African-born Lord Mayor of Leeds, she has broken barriers and inspired a generation,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
She emphasized that Katung’s induction is not only a personal achievement but also a symbol of the growing impact of Nigerian women in the diaspora who are excelling in leadership and service delivery across various continents.
“This honour is a reminder that Nigeria sees and celebrates her own—no matter where they are. At NiDCOM, we remain committed to building a strong connection between Nigeria and its diaspora through recognition, engagement, and collaboration,” she added.
According to her, NiDCOM will continue to support and spotlight Nigerians across the globe who contribute meaningfully to national development while also projecting a positive image of the country.
Responding to the honour, Mayor Abigail Marshall Katung expressed heartfelt appreciation, describing the recognition as deeply humbling and meaningful. She praised NiDCOM and the Centre for Women Development for their efforts in uplifting Nigerian women making strides globally.
The Maryam Babangida Nigerian Women Hall of Fame, located at the National Centre for Women Development in Abuja, was established to honour Nigerian women at home and abroad who have made significant contributions to leadership, advocacy, and national development.
NiDCOM reaffirmed its resolve to strengthen relationships with Nigerians in the diaspora and create more platforms to celebrate excellence and encourage reinvestment in the country’s growth and progress.
