In a bid to reshape Nigeria’s global image and deepen its engagement with diaspora communities, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has thrown its weight behind a new Diaspora Engagement Strategy unveiled by Man O’ War Nigeria.
Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who was represented by the Secretary to the Commission, Dr. Sule Yakubu Bassi, said the initiative aligns with the Commission’s broader mandate of mobilising Nigerians abroad as strategic partners in national development.
Speaking during a strategic interface with the leadership of Man O’ War in Abuja, Bassi noted that Nigeria’s diaspora population, estimated at over 20 million—comprising 18 million in the modern diaspora and 2 million in the historic African diaspora—represents a vast and underutilised resource.
“The diaspora is not just a demographic, but a formidable pool contributing to critical sectors like healthcare, ICT, sports, culture, and investment,” he said.
He reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote unity, national orientation, and patriotic citizenship among Nigerians abroad. He also highlighted ongoing efforts such as the National Diaspora Policy, Diaspora Data Mapping Portal, Nigerian Diaspora Investment Summit, and the Nigerian Diaspora Mortgage Scheme.
The National Commander of Man O’ War Nigeria, Gbenga Adedamola, who led the delegation, described the new Diaspora Command as a platform to educate Nigerians overseas about government initiatives and foster a renewed sense of civic responsibility and national pride.
“Our approach focuses on one-on-one engagement and constructive dialogue. We want to counter misinformation and rebuild trust through direct interaction with our diaspora communities,” Adedamola said.
He emphasised that Man O’ War, which was established by an Act of Parliament, remains committed to leadership development, good citizenship, and active contribution to national development both at home and abroad.
NiDCOM pledged its readiness to support the Diaspora Command’s efforts to promote Nigeria’s interests globally while strengthening the bond between the country and its citizens in the diaspora.
