The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has congratulated Capt. Kelechi Ndukwe, a distinguished Nigerian-American officer, on his promotion to Commodore in the United States Navy.
In a statement issued by Gabriel Odu of NIDCOM’s Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, the Commission described Commodore Ndukwe’s promotion as a remarkable achievement that bring pride to Nigeria, the global naval community, and Nigerians in the diaspora.
Under his new appointment, Commodore Ndukwe assumed command of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 60 and Task Force (CTF) 65, headquartered in Rota, Spain. He will oversee U.S. Navy destroyer operations in Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean further showcasing his leadership and professionalism in advancing global maritime security and cooperation.
Ndukwe had earlier made history in April 2021 when he became the first Nigerian-American to command a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Halsey (DDG-97). His rise from being the son of Nigerian immigrants to one of the highest-ranking officers in the U.S. Navy has been described as a testament to resilience, discipline, and excellence.
NIDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to celebrating Nigerians in the diaspora who embody the values of hard work, integrity, and distinction while contributing significantly to global development.
She noted that Commodore Ndukwe’s promotion exemplified the positive impact of the Nigerian diaspora and the boundless potential of Nigerians worldwide.
