The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a Nigerian national, Daniel Eheri, who reportedly died while in the custody of the Luxembourg Police, Grand-Ducale.
The Commission, in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, expressed deep concern over the incident, describing the allegations as disturbing and demanding full accountability.
NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, strongly condemned the reported death, offering condolences to the family of the deceased and the Nigerian community in Luxembourg. She assured that the Commission would work closely with the Nigerian Embassy in Belgium, which covers Luxembourg, to ensure justice is served.
According to the statement, a formal petition was sent by the Nigerian community in Luxembourg to the Federal Government of Nigeria, calling for immediate action over what they described as an extrajudicial killing.
The petition, titled “Case of an Extrajudicial Killing of a Nigerian by the Police Authority of Luxembourg,” was reportedly addressed to Hon. Dabiri-Erewa and signed by the National Coordinator of the Nigerian Community in Luxembourg, Mr. Sunday Adekolu.
In the petition, the community alleged that Eheri, who had legal residency in Luxembourg, was arrested by police on February 10, 2025, while in possession of foodstuffs. He was confirmed dead the following day, with no official explanation provided by the authorities.
“The late Eheri Daniel was a Nigerian with an untainted record in Luxembourg and a residence permit holder,” Adekolu noted, expressing disappointment at the lack of response to diplomatic communications on the matter.
The Nigerian Ambassador to Belgium, Obinna Chiedu Onowu, who also oversees Luxembourg, was said to have written two official letters regarding the case but reportedly received no reply from Luxembourg authorities.
Adekolu, on behalf of the community, urged NiDCOM to intervene urgently by demanding an autopsy and pressing for transparency in the investigation to prevent future occurrences of such incidents.
“We seek your urgent assistance to clarify the facts of the case, persuade the Luxembourg Police Grand-Ducale to conduct an autopsy on the remains of EHERI DANIEL, and to sensitise the Luxembourg Police on preventive measures against such inhuman acts in the future,” the petition read.
NiDCOM reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians abroad and emphasized the importance of accountability and justice in the matter.
