The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has received 13 Nigerian nationals rescued from a human trafficking network in Ghana, reaffirming ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable citizens abroad.
Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana for facilitating the safe return of the victims.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by the Commission’s Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa also expressed appreciation to Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, for consistently supporting rescue operations through the provision of transportation and other assistance.
According to the statement, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission collaborated with relevant agencies to ensure the smooth repatriation and reintegration of the returnees. The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) conducted profiling exercises as part of standard reintegration procedures, while NiDCOM provided logistical support to enable their safe return to their respective states.
The returnees were received on behalf of the NiDCOM chairman by the Commission’s Head of Operations in Lagos, Mr. Dele Ogunkanbi.
Dabiri-Erewa reiterated concerns over the increasing dangers associated with irregular migration, warning young Nigerians to avoid unverified job offers and unsafe travel arrangements abroad.
The rescued group comprised 11 adults and two infants aged four weeks and 16 months. Initial reports indicated that some of the women and their children are currently receiving medical treatment and mental health support after being diagnosed with serious health conditions.
The repatriation exercise was led by Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Adeoye, alongside partner agencies and other stakeholders.
NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with local and international partners to combat human trafficking and ensure the safe return and reintegration of affected Nigerians.
