In a series of operations aimed at ensuring peace and security during the New Year celebrations, the Niger State Police Command has arrested 26 suspects involved in various crimes, including thuggery, armed robbery, and defilement.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Shawulu Ebenezer Danmamman, had directed the deployment of personnel to strategic locations across the state. Acting on this directive, officers carried out a clampdown on miscreants at Fadikpe and Dutsen-Kura junctions in Minna during the early hours of January 1, 2025. Twenty-three suspects, aged between 18 and 45, were arrested while burning tyres and fighting with dangerous weapons, including swords, knives, iron rods, and charms. Items such as cannabis, rolling papers, and hard drugs were also recovered.
Additionally, on December 29, 2024, police teams from Tafa and Gauraka divisions arrested two robbery suspects along the Abuja-Kaduna highway near Chachi community. The suspects, Yau Alidu (45) and Basiru Dauda (33), had blocked the road with a Mercedes Benz vehicle and robbed travelers of two motorcycles and ₦70,000. Both suspects were rescued from an angry mob by the police and confessed to the crime during interrogation. Investigations revealed that they were part of a gang, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members.
In another case, a 26-year-old man, Bala Aliyu, was arrested in Bosso, Minna, for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old girl. The incident occurred on December 14, 2024, but was reported on December 25 when the victim’s family observed injuries and questioned her. The girl narrated how she was dragged into a room and assaulted by the suspect while delivering a message.
The suspect has confessed to the crime and is in custody pending prosecution.
Meanwhile,the Police Command has commended residents for their cooperation and vigilance, which have greatly aided their efforts. The Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens in the state as the New Year begins.
