The Niger State Police Command has arrested a suspected vandal, Aliyu Kira, 27, in connection with the theft of electrical cables. The suspect was apprehended by police operatives from the Gulbin-Boka outstation under Bangi Division along the Kwimo-Gulbin Boka road on March 6, 2025, around 2:00 a.m.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP W.A. Abiodun, the suspect, who was riding a motorcycle, refused to stop when flagged down by officers on night patrol. Following a coordinated effort, he was later arrested at another security checkpoint.
A search of his belongings revealed a sack containing vandalized electrical cables, cut to size and carefully concealed to evade detection. Other recovered items included twelve kettles, a carton of chocolate, six packets of chewing gum, and a hacksaw, which the suspect allegedly used to disguise himself as a scavenger.
During interrogation, Aliyu Kira, a goldsmith, confessed to vandalizing the cables for use in producing aluminum pots. The case has been transferred to the Niger State Police Headquarters in Minna for further investigation and prosecution.
In a separate operation, police operatives in Bosso Division arrested two men in possession of a locally made pistol and ammunition during a routine stop-and-search exercise at Imrat Junction, Bosso, on March 9, 2025.
The suspects, identified as Jamilu Babangida and Abubakar Shehu of Jimi village, were traveling from Dutsen-Kura Minna to Jimi when they were intercepted. A search of their bag led to the recovery of a locally made pistol, three live 9mm rounds, and seven assorted charms.
During interrogation, Jamilu Babangida admitted to purchasing the firearm from a supplier in Bature Numa village, Kontagora, for ₦40,000, while the ammunition was bought at ₦2,000 per piece. He claimed the weapon and charms were for personal protection.
The suspects are currently under investigation, and the police have assured that necessary legal actions will follow.
SP W.A. Abiodun, reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents by intensifying security operations across the state.
