The Niger State Police Command has recovered a suspected military unexploded ordnance discovered in Zugurma community, Mashegu Local Government Area of the state, following timely intelligence and swift operational response.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Superintendent of Police Wasiu Abiodun, the recovery followed a report received on January 5, 2026, from the Divisional Police Officer of Ibbi Division that residents had sighted a suspicious object believed to be a missile in a forested area of the community. He said police operatives immediately moved to the scene and cordoned off the area to ensure public safety.
Abiodun explained that the Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, subsequently directed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear unit to take over the operation. The specialised team, led by a Chief Superintendent of Police, was deployed to the location in the early hours of January 6, 2026, with support from divisional officers and community members.
The police team successfully rendered the device safe and recovered it before conveying it to the State Police Headquarters in Minna. Preliminary assessment identified the object as a military unexploded ordnance, although its source remains unknown.
The police said investigations are ongoing to determine how the device found its way into the area, adding that further developments will be communicated to the public.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police has urged residents to remain calm, assuring that all security agencies are working assiduously to maintain safety and restore normalcy in the affected area.
