Niger State has joined the global community in commemorating World Radio Day 2026, observing this year’s UNESCO theme: “Radio and Artificial Intelligence: AI is a Tool, Not a Voice.”
In a statement marking the occasion, Hon. Obed Nuhu Nana, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, highlighted the enduring role of radio in Nigeria and Niger State. He noted that for over nine decades, radio has remained a trusted source of information, education, and entertainment, particularly for rural communities, while serving as a platform for public enlightenment, cultural preservation, and government communication.
The Commissioner observed that while artificial intelligence presents opportunities for innovation in content production, audience analysis, translation, archiving, and fact-checking, it must remain a supportive tool. “Editorial judgment, ethical responsibility, and authentic human voices must remain at the heart of broadcasting,” he said.
He further emphasized the government’s commitment to building digital capacity among broadcasters, encouraging responsible innovation, and safeguarding the integrity of information. Community radio stations, he added, remain central to state communication strategies, amplifying grassroots perspectives, promoting social cohesion, and fostering participatory governance.
Hon. Nana called on broadcasters to uphold accuracy, fairness, and balance, stressing that while AI can enhance production, it cannot replace the conscience, cultural sensitivity, and responsibility that define professional journalism. He also urged listeners to remain discerning consumers of information.
As Niger State join the global celebration, the Commissioner reaffirmed the importance of a media environment where technology strengthens, rather than substitutes, the human voice, ensuring radio continues to inform, educate, and inspire citizens across the state.
