The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims of a fatal fuel tanker explosion at the Dikko junction in Niger State, which occurred on January 18, 2025. The tragedy resulted in the loss of at least 73 lives, with several others injured.
In a statement issued after the incident, Corps Marshal Mohammed described the human toll as both “disheartening and disastrous,” urging tanker operators to adhere strictly to safety protocols while transporting petroleum products. He expressed concern over the recurrence of such accidents despite the Corps’ continuous efforts to raise safety awareness among tanker drivers and the public.
“Despite our efforts in educating tanker drivers on the inherent dangers of transporting inflammable goods and warning the public to stay clear of tanker crash sites, this devastating incident has occurred,” Mohammed said.
The FRSC has coordinated with local authorities, including Niger State, to recover the bodies of the deceased and provide medical care for those injured. The Corps Marshal confirmed that the survivors have been taken to nearby hospitals, including Suleja General Hospital, for treatment.
The FRSC also stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration to investigate the cause of the explosion and implement measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The investigation unit will collaborate with other relevant agencies to identify the root cause and offer long-term solutions.
“The nation is still reeling from a similar tragedy in Jigawa last year, and it is deeply painful that we are witnessing another at the start of this new year,” Mohammed added.
The Corps Marshal reiterated the FRSC’s commitment to working with stakeholders to ensure road safety and reduce accidents across the country. He called on all Nigerians to join in the effort to secure lives and property on the roads.
He also offered prayers for the souls of those lost in the explosion and appealed for support to aid the recovery of the injured. He commended the prompt response of the Executive Governor of Niger State, who was on the ground at the scene of the explosion.
