The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China have agreed to collaborate in tackling humanitarian challenges and reducing poverty.
The decision was reached when the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Yu Dunhai, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu in Abuja on Thursday,4th September,2025
Dr. Sununu welcomed China’s interest in partnering with Nigeria, noted that the country faces pressing humanitarian challenges such as acute child malnutrition, the plight of internally displaced persons and refugees, and the impacts of climate change. He identified possible areas of collaboration to include durable solutions for displaced persons, skills-to-wealth training, and capacity building for frontline staff of the Ministry.
Ambassador Yu said China and Nigeria shared similar demographic realities, adding that his country had in the past faced widespread hunger but has successfully lifted millions of people out of poverty. He assured that the Chinese government is ready to share its experiences with Nigeria, stressed that poverty eradication required investment in food security, agriculture, industrialisation, education, security, and development stability.
In his remarks the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Yakubu Adam Kofarmata, thanked the Ambassador for the visit and expressed optimism that the partnership would enhance the Ministry’s capacity in humanitarian response and poverty reduction.
