The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, on Tuesday welcomed the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Her Excellency Miriam Morales Palmero, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, in a meeting aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and discussing global developments.
The session provided an avenue for both nations to review their longstanding partnership, exchange views on pressing international issues, and reaffirmed their shared commitment to peace, multilateralism, and the rule of law.
Ambassador Morales Palmero expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s consistent support, highlighting the cordial and principled ties between the two countries, particularly within multilateral platforms. She briefed the Permanent Secretary on current developments in Latin America, emphasizing Cuba’s dedication to peaceful engagement, social development, free education, universal healthcare, and gender inclusion. She also stressed the importance of dialogue based on mutual respect and non-interference.
The Cuban Ambassador revealed plans for a proposed high-level visit to Nigeria by Cuba’s Vice President, Salvador Valdés Mesa, following the African Union Summit. She described the visit as a follow-up to previous engagements aimed at deepening political, economic, and diplomatic cooperation.
In response, Ambassador Ahmed welcomed the Cuban envoy and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its bilateral relationship with Cuba. He underscored Nigeria’s dedication to peace, security, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, as well as its active role in multilateral diplomacy and cooperation among developing countries on global security, development, and human rights concerns.
Both officials concluded the meeting by pledging to continue deepening Nigeria–Cuba relations for the benefit of their peoples and to sustain collaboration on regional and international matters of common interest.
