The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has dismissed a report claiming that the tenure of Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has been extended.
In a statement issued on Monday, April 1, 2025, Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada, National Public Relations Officer, clarified that the purported release, allegedly from the State House, is inaccurate and misleading. He emphasized that appointments and tenure extensions for the position of Comptroller-General of Customs are solely at the discretion of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, in accordance with the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and other relevant public service regulations.
“As of this moment, no such directive has been communicated to the NCS by the appropriate authorities,” the statement read.
The Customs leadership reaffirmed its commitment to trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security, noted that under CGC Adeniyi’s leadership, key reforms are being implemented to modernize operations and strengthen national economic growth.
The NCS therefore urged the public and stakeholders to rely on official channels for accurate information, stated that any updates on appointments or tenure decisions would be communicated through the appropriate government authorities.
