In a strategic operation aimed at curbing economic sabotage, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully seized 199,495 litres of smuggled fuel in Adamawa State. The operation, conducted under Operation Whirlwind, resulted in the interception of petroleum products worth ₦199,495,000, as smugglers used tankers, jerry cans, and drums to move the contraband.
Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, condemned the actions of the smugglers, described them as a direct assault on Nigeria’s economy. Speaking in Yola, he stated, “These unpatriotic elements remain determined to undermine the well-articulated economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.”
The intelligence-driven operation targeted smuggling routes across Adamawa and Taraba States, including the Mova, Dasin, Galamba-Song, and Mubi-Maiha corridors. Smugglers had been using night-time river crossings at Dasin Waterways and illegal storage facilities near border towns to conceal their activities.
Adeniyi assured Nigerians that the NCS remains resolute in its mission to protect the country’s energy sector and economy, added that there will be no safe haven for smugglers. He also stressed the importance of public cooperation and encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
The success of this operation was further applauded by Assistant Comptroller-General Hussain Ejibunu, who commended the leadership of CGC Adeniyi and the dedication of NCS officers.
