The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has been recognized as the ‘Best National Security Service in West, East, and Central Africa 2023/2024’ at the 18th Africa Security Watch Conference in Doha, Qatar. This prestigious accolade underscores the Service’s achievements in border security, trade facilitation, and the fight against transnational crimes.
The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi represented by Chief Superintendent of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, delivered a compelling keynote address titled “Protecting National Security Through Effective Border Control: The Nigeria Customs Example.” Adeniyi highlighted the NCS’s transformation under the Nigeria Customs Act 2023, describing borders as critical gateways for national security and economic stability.
CGC Adeniyi noted the Service’s record-breaking revenue of ₦5.1 trillion in 2024, achieved through innovative use of technology and improved compliance frameworks. He also discussed the integration of geospatial technologies like satellite feeds and geo-mapping, which have enhanced surveillance and enforcement capabilities.
“Under my leadership, the NCS has redefined its operational priorities to address emerging threats and improve efficiency. This reflects not only in our revenue achievements but also in the dedication and resilience of our workforce,” Adeniyi stated.
The CGC detailed the Service’s accomplishments in combatting arms trafficking, including the seizure of 844 rifles and 112,500 rounds of live ammunition at Onne Seaport. Collaborations with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other stakeholders have also led to interceptions of illicit drugs and wildlife trafficking.
Efforts to combat economic sabotage were highlighted, with the CGC revealing that Operation Whirlwind intercepted over 695,000 liters of smuggled Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in collaboration with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
At the conference’s Gala and Award Night on December 12, 2024, CGC Adeniyi was personally recognized for his exemplary leadership, while the NCS received the award for outstanding performance in fortifying Nigeria’s borders.
