The Federal Government of Nigeria has thrown its weight behind China’s new Global Governance Initiative (GGI), describing it as a timely effort to strengthen the international system and tackle shared global challenges.
The initiative was unveiled at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus meeting in Tianjin, China, on September 1, 2025, ahead of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.
In a statement on Thursday, September 11, 2025, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa commended China for introducing the GGI, which build on the Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI).
According to the Ministry, the GGI addresses critical issues such as climate change, digital inequality, emerging technologies, and the need for broader representation in global decision-making.
Nigeria welcomed the initiative’s five guiding principles—sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, people-centered governance, and results-oriented action noted that they align with its national development goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
The government also highlighted its readiness to work with partners across the Global South to push for reforms at the United Nations and promote inclusive governance in emerging domains like artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and outer space.
“With this endorsement, Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to a fairer, more inclusive, and effective international order that reflects the aspirations of all nations,” the Ministry stated.
