The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sympathy and solidarity with South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe following devastating floods that have claimed over 100 lives and displaced thousands across Southern Africa.
Speaking through a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said weeks of torrential rainfall had triggered the floods, leading to overflowing rivers, destruction of roads and bridges, widespread displacement, and disruption of agriculture and essential services.
Ebienfa noted that the Federal Government was particularly concerned about the secondary humanitarian consequences of the disaster, including rising food insecurity, heightened risks of disease outbreaks, and the increased vulnerability of women, children and other at-risk populations.
He added that Nigeria stand in solidarity with the ongoing rescue, evacuation and relief operations being undertaken by national authorities, regional bodies and international humanitarian partners, while commending the resilience of the affected countries as they begin recovery and rebuilding efforts.
The spokesperson further underscored the growing threat posed by climate-related extreme weather events across Africa, stressed the need for strengthened regional cooperation, effective early-warning systems, enhanced climate adaptation strategies and sustained international support.
Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation in disaster preparedness, humanitarian response and climate resilience, assuring the affected countries of its continued goodwill and support.
