Nigeria and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following a high-level diplomatic meeting between the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, and the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Günther, in Abuja.
The meeting focused on expanding cooperation in multilateral diplomacy, economic development, cultural heritage preservation, and institutional coordination, reflecting the growing strategic partnership between both countries.
Welcoming the German delegation, Ambassador Ahmed reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to sustained diplomatic engagement with Germany, emphasized the country’s openness to constructive dialogue and collaboration on areas of mutual interest. He assured that the Ministry remains ready to facilitate continuous engagement aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
In her remarks, Ambassador Günther expressed Germany’s appreciation for the longstanding relationship between both nations, highlighting the successful Nigeria–Germany Bi-National Commission held in November 2025 as a major milestone that reinforced the depth of cooperation between Abuja and Berlin.
A key aspect of the discussions centred on reciprocal support in multilateral institutions, particularly candidacies to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The German envoy recalled the 2024 exchange of notes on mutual backing and commended Nigeria for its principled support of Germany’s candidature. She reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to multilateralism and ongoing advocacy for reforms within the United Nations system, including increased African representation on the Security Council.
The talks also addressed collaboration in infrastructure development, especially in the energy sector. Ambassador Günther noted Germany’s continued interest in supporting Nigeria’s efforts to modernise energy transmission and distribution systems through investment and technical expertise, described the sector as critical to Nigeria’s economic growth.
Responding, Ambassador Ahmed underscored the importance of coordinated diplomatic engagement on multilateral matters, assuring that relevant departments would review outstanding documentation relating to reciprocal arrangements and future cooperation frameworks. He further reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to advancing energy reforms, infrastructure resilience, and sustainable investment partnerships with Germany.
Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to enhanced security cooperation, with Germany expressing readiness to expand capacity-building initiatives and collaborative efforts aimed at promoting regional stability and addressing shared security challenges.
The meeting concluded with both countries pledging to deepen cooperation anchored on mutual respect, shared global responsibilities, and a commitment to peace, development, and cultural diplomacy within a rules-based international order.
The engagement highlighted the continued strengthening of Nigeria–Germany relations and their shared resolve to advance multilateral cooperation and sustainable development goals.
