The Federal Government has commended the outgoing Ambassador of Mexico to Nigeria, Alfredo Miranda Ortiz, for his contributions to strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between both countries.
The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, conveyed the commendation through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, during a farewell audience held on Tuesday in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary praised Ortiz for his impactful service during his nearly four-year tenure, noting that Nigeria–Mexico relations had witnessed significant progress, particularly in diplomatic engagement and structured bilateral cooperation.
In his remarks, Ambassador Ortiz expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government for its support, highlighting key achievements recorded during his stay. These include the establishment of the Nigeria–Mexico Chamber of Commerce, the appointment of an Honorary Consul in Lagos, and strengthened agricultural trade.
He specifically referenced the collaboration between SENASICA and NAQS, which has boosted the export of hibiscus from Nigeria to Mexico, describing it as a major milestone in economic cooperation.
Ahmed noted the steady growth in economic ties, including diversification of trade and increased investment in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for foreign direct investment and urged Mexican businesses to explore opportunities in agriculture and agro-processing.
The Permanent Secretary also emphasized the need to expand cooperation into emerging sectors such as manufacturing, mining, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, as well as the digital and creative economy.
He further highlighted that 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Mexico, describing it as a significant milestone that reflects the resilience and steady growth of bilateral ties since 1976.
While commending the cordial relations between both countries, Ahmed stressed the importance of sustaining the momentum through continued high-level engagements and effective implementation of bilateral agreements.
In his response, Ortiz pledged to continue supporting Nigeria–Mexico relations even after his retirement from diplomatic service.
The meeting ended with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepening cooperation and strengthening longstanding bilateral relations.
