Nigeria, Palestine deepen Diplomatic and Consular Ties

Nigeria and the State of Palestine have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing consular cooperation following a high-level diplomatic engagement in Abuja.

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, OON, on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, received the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Nigeria, His Excellency Muhannad Halmouri, on a courtesy visit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting formed part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to deepen relations between both countries and provided an opportunity to review key issues bordering on consular services, humanitarian concerns, and regional developments of mutual interest.

During the engagement, Ambassador Halmouri conveyed warm greetings from the Palestinian leadership and expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s longstanding and principled support for the Palestinian cause. He recalled the historic ties between both nations, dating back to the era of late Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, and commended Nigeria’s consistent moral and diplomatic stance at international fora.

Discussions also focused on the humanitarian situation in Gaza and other Palestinian territories. The Ambassador briefed the Minister on prevailing security challenges and restrictions affecting humanitarian access, while acknowledging Nigeria’s constructive role in promoting peaceful resolution of the conflict in line with international law.

Looking ahead, the Palestinian envoy expressed his government’s interest in a future visit by the Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs to Nigeria. He noted that such a visit would further strengthen diplomatic engagement and could include interactions with the National Assembly.

In his response, Ambassador Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people and reiterated the country’s commitment to justice, peaceful coexistence, and respect for international law. He assured the envoy that issues raised would be addressed through appropriate diplomatic and administrative channels.

The meeting ended on a cordial note, underscored the warm and enduring relationship between Nigeria and Palestine and their shared resolve to sustain dialogue and cooperation.
