The Inspector-General of Police IGP Kayode Egbetokun warmly welcomed retired Inspectors-General of Police (IGPs) on a solidarity visit to the Force Headquarters on Tuesday, emphasizing the enduring spirit of unity, continuity, and shared service within the Nigeria Police Force.
In his address, the IGP described the retired officers as “fathers of the Force” who have shaped its direction and devoted their lives to national security. He noted that the visit offered a unique opportunity for past and present leadership to exchange insights, strengthen institutional memory, and reinforce the principle that policing is a lifelong commitment.
The IGP also highlighted key reforms implemented over the last two years aimed at improving operational effectiveness, professionalism, and public trust. These include the elevation of the Intelligence Unit to a full Department, the Legal Unit to a Directorate, and the Medical Unit to a Directorate with a digitized records system.
Operational enhancements were also underscored, including the expansion of the Police Mobile Force from 74 to 80 Squadrons, the creation of new Area Commands and Divisions, and the establishment of a Special Intervention Squad to address high-risk security challenges.
The IGP Egbetokun further stressed the importance of ethics, discipline, and merit-based personnel management, noting that 141,054 officers have been promoted under a transparent, merit-driven framework.
While acknowledging challenges such as misinformation campaigns on social media, he reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and public engagement. “We count on the wisdom and guidance of respected senior leaders such as yourselves in sustaining institutional stability and public trust,” he said.
The IGP expressed gratitude to the retired officers for their visit, emphasized that the ongoing reforms build upon the solid foundations laid by previous leadership and are critical for a modern, effective, and trusted Nigeria Police Force.
