The Nigeria Police Force, through its INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, has successfully repatriated $23,000 recovered from an international romance scammer to a victim in the Cayman Islands.
The repatriation followed a request from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service for assistance in investigating Achufusi Obioma Ikenna, a Nigerian national accused of defrauding a Cayman Islands resident through an online romance scam.
Acting on the request, INTERPOL NCB Abuja carried out discreet, intelligence-led investigations, which led to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of the funds. The recovered sum was formally handed over to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service through the British High Commission in Abuja, represented by Mr. Shaun McLeary, ensuring secure delivery to the victim. The suspect is set to be arraigned upon completion of the investigation.
Ag. ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Force Public Relations Officer, in a release stated that the operation highlighted the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing, international cooperation, and disrupting transnational cybercrime networks. He emphasized that the Force remains determined to trace and recover criminal proceeds, return them to victims, and bring offenders to justice in line with both national and international best practices.
