Nigeria and Sweden have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations, with a focus on trade, innovation, and regional cooperation, following a high-level meeting between Yusuf Maitama Tuggar and Anna Westerholm in Abuja.
During the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, both diplomats emphasized the importance of expanding collaboration across key sectors, including technology, energy, and the creative industry.
Ambassador Westerholm expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s hospitality since assuming office in August 2025, noting the strong goodwill and cordial relations between both countries. She highlighted Sweden’s readiness to deepen engagement with Nigeria, particularly in trade, investment, and strategic partnerships.
A major area of interest for Sweden, she said, is supporting Nigeria’s green and digital transition. As a global leader in innovation, Sweden sees significant opportunities to collaborate with Nigeria in advancing digital infrastructure, connectivity, and technology development.
The Swedish envoy also pointed to potential partnerships in the energy sector and the creative economy, especially in music production. She acknowledged the global influence of Nigeria’s Afrobeats and creative talent, stressing that Swedish expertise in music production and business models could complement Nigeria’s vibrant industry.
In a move to boost economic ties, Sweden recently upgraded its commercial presence in Nigeria with the establishment of a Swedish Trade Office in Lagos, led by a government-appointed Trade Commissioner. The development follows a prior visit by the Swedish Crown Princess, signaled increased commitment to trade and investment relations.
On the international stage, Sweden commended Nigeria’s role as a key partner in promoting a rules-based global order, particularly through collaboration at the United Nations. Both countries also discussed regional issues, including security challenges in the Sahel and evolving dynamics within Economic Community of West African States, as well as relations with the Alliance of Sahel States.
In his remarks, Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and enhancing regional cooperation as critical tools for addressing security and governance challenges in West Africa. He stressed Nigeria’s ongoing engagement with ECOWAS member states to promote stability and long-term solutions across the region.
The minister also underscored the importance of regional economic integration, citing progress under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS), while calling for increased private sector participation to fully harness its benefits.
Both parties agreed to sustain high-level consultations and explore new avenues for cooperation. A visit by Sweden’s State Secretary to Nigeria is expected next week to further advance bilateral discussions.
