Nigeria and Türkiye have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to Ankara.
The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, made this known while receiving the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Mehmet Poroy, on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, in Abuja.
Ambassador Poroy commended the Nigerian government for the effective coordination that ensured the success of President Tinubu’s visit. He noted that the visit further deepened relations between both countries as strategic partners and expressed optimism over the implementation of agreements reached by their leaders.
In his response, Ambassador Tuggar described the visit as historic, saying it had opened a new chapter in Nigeria–Türkiye relations. He praised the signing of nine landmark agreements during the visit, describing them as beneficial to the governments and citizens of both nations.
The minister also called for stronger collaboration in capacity building and training, particularly through enhanced cooperation between the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy in Ijanikin, Lagos, and the Turkish Diplomatic Institute.
Both sides also agreed to strengthen communication channels and establish follow-up mechanisms to ensure effective implementation of decisions. They further resolved to hold a Political Consultative Meeting later in the year to achieve targeted outcomes.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Nigeria and Türkiye to deepen diplomatic, economic, and institutional cooperation.
