The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting national sovereignty in migration management while deepening security collaboration and expanding economic opportunities with the United Kingdom.
This assurance was given by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a courtesy visit by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, and his delegation to the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking during the meeting, the minister described migration management as a shared responsibility and a key pillar of Nigeria’s strategic security partnership with the UK. He revealed that both countries are working toward finalising an updated Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Migration and Returns aimed at ensuring efficient, lawful and humane migration processes.
Tunji-Ojo welcomed the United Kingdom’s continued cooperation in intelligence sharing, technical assistance and operational coordination, noting that migration justice collaboration between both nations has lasted for over two decades.
He added that Nigeria remained committed to ongoing reforms designed to modernise the country’s immigration system, improve passport administration and promote legitimate mobility, while safeguarding national security and economic interests.
According to the minister, the Federal Government is also focused on balancing effective border control with economic development, stressing that attracting credible investment aligns with the administration’s broader economic reform agenda.
In his remarks, Montgomery commended Nigeria’s clear policy direction, highlighting the importance of predictable and efficient systems in achieving shared migration and security goals. He described the engagement as professional, forward-looking and solutions-oriented.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in migration management, security collaboration and economic growth.
