Nigeria marked its 65th Independence anniversary today, October 1, 2025, with President Bola Tinubu delivering a national broadcast, highlighting the country’s progress and challenges. The President emphasized that his administration has embarked on fundamental reforms to reset the economy for sustainable growth, and he is confident that the nation has turned the corner towards economic prosperity.

 

Tinubu reflected on Nigeria’s journey since independence, acknowledged the nation’s resilience and progress despite various challenges. He paid tribute to the country’s founding fathers and heroines, who believed in Nigeria’s manifest destiny to lead Africa and be a beacon of light to the world. The President noted that while the nation has not achieved all the lofty dreams of its forebears, it has made tremendous progress in economic growth, social cohesion, and physical development.

 

The President highlighted the administration’s economic reforms, which have led to significant milestones. These reforms included ending corrupt fuel subsidies and multiple foreign exchange rates, redirecting resources to fund education, healthcare, national security, and critical infrastructure. Tinubu emphasized that these initiatives will improve Nigerians’ quality of life and create opportunities for growth.

 

Tinubu also commended Nigerians for their resilience and support, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering on its promises. He stressed the need for collective action to accelerate development, warned that Nigeria remained in a race against time on infrastructure. The President urged young people to dream big, innovate, and contribute to the nation’s growth, citing initiatives such as NELFUND, Credicorp, and YouthCred.

 

The President further emphasized the importance of national security, highlighting the efforts of the armed forces and security agencies in combating terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes. He noted that peace has returned to hundreds of liberated communities in North-West and North-East, and thousands of people have returned safely to their homes.

 

Tinubu concluded by assuring Nigerians that the dawn of a new, prosperous, self-reliant Nigeria is here. He called on all Nigerians to join hands in nation-building, believing in the boundless potential of the great nation, and working together to build a prosperous future for all. With Almighty God on their side, the President expressed confidence that Nigeria will overcome its challenges and achieve greatness.
