The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into an alleged case of child abuse reported at the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC) in Kontagora Military Cantonment.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, reportedly came to light after a soldier living in a nearby apartment heard the distress cries of a child from a neighbouring residence. Concerned by the situation, the soldier gained access to the apartment and allegedly discovered a seven-year-old girl being physically assaulted by two sisters identified as her relatives and custodians.
Preliminary findings suggest that the child was allegedly punished over concerns relating to her earlier whereabouts. Further information indicated possible neglect, including alleged denial of meals and restrictions from using basic household facilities.
Eyewitness accounts also claim that similar incidents may have occurred previously despite earlier warnings.
It was gathered that the girl had been living with her uncle’s family within the cantonment following the death of her father. She was reportedly brought to the barracks to receive care and continue her education.
Following the report, the Commander of the training centre, Major General A.G.L. Haruna, immediately directed the NATRAC Military Police to launch a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The child was promptly evacuated to the cantonment’s medical centre for evaluation and is currently in stable condition. Pending the outcome of the investigation, temporary custody of the girl has been entrusted to a family within the cantonment who volunteered to provide care and support.
Authorities at NATRAC reiterated their commitment to the welfare and protection of children and dependants of military personnel, assuring that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken in line with existing regulations once the investigation is concluded.
