The Nigerian Armed Forces have announced significant successes in the ongoing counterterrorism and security operations across the country from January to December 2024. In a year marked by intensified threats, troops have demonstrated resilience and commitment to securing the nation, operating in five active theatres: North-East (NE), North-West (NW), North-Central (NC), South-South (SS), and South-East (SE).
According to Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations at a biweekly Media briefing held Thursday in Defence Headquarters Abuja,, a total of 8,034 terrorists were neutralized, 11,623 suspects arrested, and 6,376 hostages rescued during the year. The operations also resulted in the recovery of 8,216 weapons, 211,459 rounds of ammunition, and the disruption of oil theft valued at over ₦57 billion.
He said the military recovered seapons which included 4,053 AK-47 rifles, 1,123 locally fabricated guns, 731 dane guns, and 240 pump-action guns, among others.
The Troops also seized 120,247 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 41,515 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and 5,373 cartridges.
On the Oil Theft, military operations led to the recovery of over 53 million litres of stolen crude oil, along with 9.1 million litres of illegally refined AGO and other petroleum products.
General Buba emphasized the military’s ongoing efforts to create an environment where terrorists cannot operate or harm citizens.
“These operations are steadily increasing pressure on terrorist groups, curbing their ability to execute acts of violence,
“The Armed Forces continue to evaluate and enhance operational strategies to ensure the safety of Nigerians. With the current trajectory, military authorities remain optimistic about achieving a decisive victory over terrorism and other forms of insecurity” he stated.
As 2024 end approaching, the Nigerian military assured citizens of its unwavering commitment to peace and security across the nation. “Efforts will remain focused on maintaining momentum in all theatres of operation to secure lasting stability”General Buba added.
