The Nigerian Navy has commissioned a modern Primary Health Care Centre in Umunisu Ugbawka, located in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, in a move aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services in rural communities.
The facility was established in honour of Rear Admiral Patrick Chibueze Nwatu (Rtd) under the Navy’s Special Intervention Quick Impact Projects initiative designed to support community development and enhance civil-military relations.
Representing the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, the Director of Veteran Affairs, Rear Admiral Raheem Taofeek, said the project demonstrated the Navy’s commitment to national development through impactful social investments. He noted that the intervention reflected the service’s dedication to strengthening cooperation between the military and civilian populations.
According to naval authorities, the health centre will provide essential services including maternal and child healthcare, immunisation programmes, and basic laboratory diagnostics, significantly reducing the burden on residents who previously travelled long distances for medical care.
The Enugu State Government, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Professor George Ugwu, confirmed that the facility is fully equipped and staffed to operate round the clock. He added that the installation of solar-powered electricity ensures uninterrupted healthcare delivery.
Stakeholders and community members described the project as a major boost to grassroots healthcare, expressing optimism that the centre will improve public health outcome and enhance the overall well-being of residents in the area.
