The Nigerian Navy on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, welcomed the Commander of the West and Central French African Command, Major General Pascal Ianni, along with Major General AG Laka, National Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, and members of their delegation, in a high-level courtesy visit to the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas (Admiralty Medal).The visit provided an opportunity to strengthen existing defence and maritime security cooperation between Nigeria and France, while exploring avenues for deeper collaboration in maritime domain awareness, capacity building, training, and regional security initiatives within the Gulf of Guinea.
In his remarks, Vice Admiral Abbas emphasised Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining a secure maritime environment and enhancing regional security through professional engagement and operational collaboration. He highlighted the long-standing partnership between the Nigerian and French navies, particularly through joint exercises like Exercise CROCODILE LIFT, which enhance interoperability and promote collective action against transnational maritime threats.
Major General Ianni praised Nigeria as a reliable and strategic partner, underscored the importance of sustained engagement and coordinated efforts with African nations to address security challenges in the Gulf of Guinea.
The visit further reinforced the Nigerian Navy’s leadership role in promoting regional maritime security, building capacity, and fostering strong partnerships for a safer Gulf of Guinea.
