The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians against the indiscriminate sharing or sale of their personal data, especially their National Identification Numbers (NIN), stressing that it will not be held responsible for any misuse arising from such actions.
This caution comes in response to a recent disclosure by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which revealed a disturbing trend involving young Nigerians buying personal data from unsuspecting citizens at token amounts ranging between ₦1,500 and ₦2,000 and reselling the same to some fintech firms for up to ₦5,000.
NIMC, in a statement signed by its Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, described the development as not only a serious security threat but one with grave implications for affected NIN holders.
“The Commission wishes to state clearly that it will not be held liable for any personal information shared by an individual either directly or by proxy for financial gain or inducement,” the statement read.
NIMC reiterated that Nigerians have been repeatedly advised not to disclose their NIN or personal data to unauthorized individuals or organizations. It also emphasized that all NINs presented for service access must be properly verified before any services are rendered.
To further enhance the security of NIN data, the Commission encouraged members of the public to download and use the NINAuth App, available on both Apple iOS and Google Play Store. The app enabled users to secure their NIN, manage access to their personal information, and enjoy additional protective features.
The Commission urged citizens to remain vigilant and safeguard their identity data against misuse in the interest of national and personal security.
