In a significant step towards promoting cleaner and more sustainable energy in Nigeria, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has donated 35 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG).
The handover ceremony, held at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, saw the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, restated the company’s commitment to the Federal Government’s gas-driven energy transition.
Engr. Ojulari noted that the donation aligned with NNPC Ltd.’s ongoing efforts to accelerate the adoption of CNG as a cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable fuel alternative. He highlighted the company’s progress in gas supply, infrastructure development, and expansion of retail distribution outlets across the country.
“I am proud that NNPC Ltd is playing a pivotal role in driving the Federal Government’s gas agenda towards energy transition,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, described the CNG buses as more than just vehicles calling them symbols of economic relief, social equity, and environmental responsibility.
“They signal a future where the ordinary Nigerian can commute safely, affordably, and efficiently,” the Minister said, adding that the initiative reflected President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at reducing transportation costs and maximising Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves.
NNPC Ltd.’s Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mr. Mumuni Dagazau, noted the economic benefits of CNG adoption, including reduced dependence on petrol (PMS) and diesel (AGO), as well as cost savings and a boost to the local gas industry.
Similarly, the Executive Vice President, Gas, Power & New Energy, Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye, emphasized NNPC Ltd.’s leadership role in advancing CNG commercialisation nationwide.
In her remarks, the Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, highlighted how the initiative represents NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to building a new energy future that serves people, communities, and the environment.
Programme Coordinator and CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, commended NNPC Ltd. for its consistent partnership and support since the inception of the initiative.
The donation mark another milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward a more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible transportation sector.
