Illegal mining operations across Nigeria are facing unprecedented enforcement as the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Special Mining Marshals intensify their crackdown, dismantling illegal sites and restoring order in mineral-rich communities.
In a decisive operation over the weekend, the Special Mining Marshals, led by Commander ACC Attah John Onoja, stormed the Jagula/Okolom area of Yagba East Local Government in Kogi State, dislodging illegal miners and criminal elements who had plagued the region for over a decade. The area, under the mineral title of North South Extractive Company Limited, had long suffered from illegal mining activities and banditry, leading to security threats such as kidnappings and violent crimes.
The launch of the Special Mining Marshals by the Federal Government in 2024 marked a turning point in the fight against illegal mining. Following the latest operation, the marshals established round-the-clock surveillance, ensuring that legitimate title holders could commence road construction and exploration efforts without interference. The intervention has significantly reduced crime rates in the region, bringing much-needed relief to the local population.
However, in a renewed attempt to reclaim the territory, the expelled illegal miners and bandits regrouped at three different locations, about two kilometers from the cleared site. In response, the Special Mining Marshals swiftly carried out another clearance operation after issuing multiple warnings.
The intensified crackdown has not only secured mining sites but also paved the way for economic growth. With increased security, legitimate mining operations are expanding, generating employment for local youth, boosting government revenue, and enhancing infrastructural development in host communities. Traditional rulers in the affected areas have hailed the intervention as a game-changer, commending the marshals for their dedication.
Dr. Adekunle Oladele, President of the Nigerian Geological Society, praised the initiative, attributed the rising compliance with mining regulations to the relentless enforcement by the marshals.
“The number of illegal miners arrested is notable, but even more significant is the increase in compliance rates,” Dr. Oladele stated. “The mining sector is witnessing a level of order and discipline that was previously unheard of.”
North South Extractive Company Limited has also expressed appreciation to the NSCDC, highlighting the marshals’ professionalism and patriotism in ensuring a secure and conducive environment for legal mining activities.
Commander Onoja reaffirmed the marshals’ commitment to sustaining the momentum. “Our mission is to create a safe and regulated mining environment. We will not relent until illegal mining is completely eradicated,” he emphasized.
The nationwide crackdown has already led to multiple arrests, site closures, and the seizure of illegal mining equipment. Stakeholders are optimistic that these efforts will transform Nigeria’s mining sector, attracting investment and fostering long-term sustainability.
NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Abubakar Ahmed Audi, has pledged continued support for the Special Mining Marshals, assuring that the government will provide the necessary resources to strengthen their operations.
With sustained enforcement, industry experts believe Nigeria is on course to achieving a well-regulated and thriving mining sector, free from the scourge of illegal operations.
