The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has announced the appointment of five new Imams for the Abuja National Mosque. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the NSCIA Boardroom, National Mosque Complex, Abuja.
Addressing the press, the Secretary-General of the NSCIA ,Prof Ishaq Oloyede stated that the appointments were part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the Religious Affairs Unit of the National Mosque and to enhance its role as a hub for worship, training, and scholarship.
The newly appointed Imams, whose selection has been endorsed by the General Purpose Committee (GPC), the Expanded General Purpose Committee (EGPC), and the National Fatwa Committee, are:
1. Prof. Ilyasu Usman (visiting)
2. Prof. Luqman Zakariyah (resident)
3. Sheikh Abdulkadir Salman, PhD (visiting)
4. Barr. Haroun Muhammad Eze (Resident)
5. Prof. Khalid Aliyu Abubakar (visiting)
The Secretary-General noted that the development fulfilled a 2017 commitment by the Council to increase representation among Imams, particularly from the South-South and South-East regions.
Speaking on behalf of the President-General of the NSCIA and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Secretary-General expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the process and prayed for divine guidance for the newly appointed Imams in their roles.
The Abuja National Mosque, established in 1984, remains a symbol of Islamic unity and a center for spiritual leadership in Nigeria. The addition of these Imams is expected to enhance the delivery of religious services and scholarship at the Mosque.
This development mark another landmark in the history of the Abuja National Mosque since its restructuring in 2017, when Prof. Shehu Ahmad Sa’id Galadanci was appointed as the Murshid.
The new appointments underlined the NSCIA’s commitment to inclusivity, scholarship, and spiritual growth for the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.
