The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, has cautioned the State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, against arbitrary actions that undermine democratic norms, following his directive to shut down a privately-owned radio station, Badeggi FM 90.1, in Minna.
The Union expressed its concern after an emergency meeting of its State Working Committee, warned that the Governor’s action contravene constitutional provisions and regulatory procedures governing the broadcast industry in Nigeria.
In a statement issued by the Council Secretary, Comrade Usman Chiji, the NUJ reminded the Governor that only the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is legally empowered to issue or revoke broadcast licenses, and such actions must follow due process, including judicial interpretation when necessary.
“The NUJ calls on the Governor to channel any complaints regarding the radio station to the NBC, which has the statutory authority to handle such matters,” the statement read.
The Union further stated that rather than resorting to executive fiat, the Governor should have engaged the NUJ as the professional body to address any concerns related to journalistic misconduct.
While reaffirming its opposition to any form of media gagging, the NUJ also encouraged journalists and media organizations in the state to uphold ethical standards and professionalism. It noted that a committee headed by veteran journalist Pastor Dan Amashingha has been constituted to carry out a revalidation of NUJ membership and ensure professionalism within the industry.
The NUJ urged Governor Bago to adopt a partnership approach with media practitioners and organizations in the state, instead of actions that could be interpreted as repressive.
The statement concluded by calling for the immediate withdrawal of the closure order in the interest of democracy and press freedom.
