The Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, FCT Council has congratulated the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ on its 30th anniversary.
In a statement signed by Chairman of NUJ FCT Council ,Emmanuel Ogbeche ,the council stated the objective of the founding of the NAWOJ was to give women journalists a platform to commonly tackle issues affecting women in the media.
“It is gratifying to note that three decades after, we have more women in leadership positions in the media and at union levels.
However, we at the FCT Council of the NUJ are not unmindful of subsisting issues of sexual harassment, not so friendly workplace policies like lack of crèches in most media spaces and general gender imbalance.
We are persuaded that with more engagement, these are issues that will soon be drastically reduced if not totally eliminated.
We are happy that at the NUJ FCT, more women have held offices, and holding offices at the council and proving their mettle by the day. Also, the council will continue to support the FCT Chapter of the NAWOJ and all female journalists to realize their great potential.
While we congratulate the NAWOJ National Chairperson, Ifeyinwa Omowole, and her executive, we urge her to do more in bringing female journalists together and leverage on their numbers to push for a more responsive and responsible association”.the statement read.
NUJ FCT council further commended the founding leaders of the NAWOJ and all past National Chairpersons and officials of the association for the attained feats.
