The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has charged journalists in the Federal Capital Territory to recommit themselves to ethical journalism, unity, and professional excellence as they step into the 2026 New Year.
In her New Year message to members of the Council, Ike commended journalists for their resilience, courage, and professionalism in the past year, noted that despite numerous challenges, members upheld the ideals of the journalism profession with dedication and integrity.
She described journalists as the conscience of society and custodians of truth, stressing that their role in shaping narratives, strengthening democracy, and promoting national cohesion has become even more critical in the face of evolving social and political realities.
Looking ahead to 2026, the NUJ FCT Chairman assured members of the Council’s commitment to prioritising welfare, professional development, and unity. According to her, the leadership will continue to advocate for improved working conditions, enhanced capacity-building opportunities, and stronger institutional support to enable journalists thrive in a rapidly changing media landscape.
Ike also emphasised the importance of ethical journalism, warned that misinformation and disinformation pose serious threats to public trust. She urged journalists to remain guided by the NUJ Code of Ethics, anchored on accuracy, fairness, balance, and integrity, so that their reports continue to inform, educate, and inspire the public without fear or favour.
She further called for solidarity among members, noting that the strength of the Council lies in unity, mutual respect, and shared purpose. According to her, a united NUJ FCT Council will better protect its members and foster an environment where professionalism and excellence can flourish.
The NUJ FCT Chairman encouraged journalists to approach the New Year with optimism, a renewed sense of mission, and openness to innovation without compromising core professional values.
She concluded by wishing members and their families a peaceful, fulfilling, and prosperous New Year, expressing hope that 2026 will bring good health, professional fulfilment, and collective success to journalists across the FCT.
