The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has commended the Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his visible efforts in driving infrastructural development across the nation’s capital.
The commendation came through a communiqué issued after the Council’s first Congress, held on Saturday at its Secretariat in Utako, Abuja. The Congress, presided over by the NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, attracted over 400 members, including former Council Chairmen and past leaders of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).
While acknowledging the minister’s achievements, the union urged the government to implement economic reforms to address the rising cost of living, which it identified as a growing burden on FCT residents and Nigerians in general.
In her opening remarks, Comrade Grace Ike emphasized the Council’s commitment to advancing the welfare of its members and fostering unity. She stated, “This Congress represents an opportunity to reaffirm our dedication to unity, progress, and the collective good of journalism.”
The Congress deliberated on critical national issues, including the escalating cost of goods and services, erratic power supply, and the rising level of insecurity. The Council called on the Federal Government to adopt urgent measures to address the economic challenges plaguing the nation.
It also decried the frequent disruptions in electricity and water supply in the FCT, described them as obstacles to business operations and daily living. “The erratic supply of basic amenities is increasing operational costs for businesses and deepening hardships for residents,” the communiqué noted.
The Congress als6 expressed grave concern over the worsening security situation, particularly reports of ritual killings and other heinous crimes, which it linked to economic hardship.
The Council therefore urged stakeholders to collaborate in tackling the nation’s economic and security challenges while pledging its commitment to the welfare and unity of its members.
