The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has announced the death of Prophetess Ogonnaya Regina Umeham, a former Secretary of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter.
Prophetess Umeham, who passed away on Friday morning after a prolonged illness, was a former staff member of Daily Times Newspapers and, until her death, served as the News Editor of Weekenders Magazine.
The NUJ FCT Council expressed its profound grief in a statement issued on Saturday by its Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, describing her passing as a devastating loss.
According to the statement, “The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council joins the family, friends, colleagues, and associates of Prophetess Ogonnaya Umeham in mourning the sudden passing of this vibrant journalist, whose health sadly deteriorated in recent months.”
The council noted that the death of Prophetess Umeham is particularly heartbreaking as it comes shortly after the demise of another member, Rafat Idris.
The statement further highlighted Umeham’s contributions to the media industry, stating, “Prophetess Umeham worked with several reputable media organizations, including Daily Times Newspapers. She also served as the Secretary of the Credentials Committee for the Delegates Conference of NAWOJ held in Kano, where Comrade Gbenga Onayiga was the Chairman.”
Prophetess Umeham’s family is expected to announce funeral arrangements in due course.
Her death has left a void in the journalism community, particularly among her colleagues in the FCT, who fondly remember her dedication, professionalism, and significant contributions to the industry.
