The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has announced with deep sorrow the sudden death of its former Secretary, Mrs. Rafat Idris, who passed away in the early hours of Friday, December 20, 2024, in Abuja after a brief illness.
In a statement issued by the Council Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the NUJ described Mrs. Idris’s death as a shocking and irreplaceable loss to the journalism profession.
“The NUJ FCT Council received the news of the sudden death of our former Secretary, Mrs. Rafat Salami, today with a rude shock and disbelief. Rafat was an asset to journalism, a quintessential journalist, and a remarkable leader who served the Union meritoriously at various levels,” the statement said.
The Union lauded her dedication and contributions to the growth of journalism, highlighting her qualities as a peace-loving and selfless professional who remained an integral member of the NUJ community.
Mrs. Idris served as the Assistant Director of Digital Media at Voice of Nigeria (VON) and was re-elected Treasurer of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria just last week. She was also a passionate advocate for children with special needs, founded Okenite Foundation for Special Needs Children.
Hailing from Ihima in the Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State, Mrs. Idris is survived by her three children.
The NUJ FCT Council extended its condolences to her family, the VON Chapel, and the entire management of VON, described her as a cherished friend and mother figure to many in the profession.
She will be buried later today at the Gudu Cemetery in Abuja, according to Islamic rites.
