As part of its commitment to nurturing responsible journalism and promoting media literacy from an early age, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has announced the revival and strengthening of press clubs in secondary schools across Abuja.
This was revealed during an interactive session held at Government Secondary School (GSS), Garki, where the NUJ FCT Vice Chairman, Comrade Yahaya Ndababo, represented the council. He emphasized that instilling journalistic ethics and skills at the grassroots is crucial for building a vibrant and professional media landscape.
“Our goal is to promote professionalism from the grassroots by empowering students with journalistic skills and values early on,” Comrade Ndababo stated.
The union has scheduled Thursday, 24th July 2025, for the official launch of the Press Club Revival Project, beginning with two pilot schools within the FCT.
He noted that the initiative is a key step in raising a future generation of journalists committed to ethical media practice and accurate information dissemination.
In her remarks, the Matron of the GSS Garki Press Club, Mrs. Udofia Emauwa Unyime, lauded the NUJ’s intervention, describing it as a “timely and visionary effort” that will reignite students’ interest in journalism and positively impact their communication skills and civic awareness.
The press club revival initiative is one of the flagship programmes of the 2025 NUJ FCT Press Week, which aims to promote press freedom, media development, and civic engagement. This year’s theme is: “Journalism in a Changing World: Press Freedom, Media, Democracy and the Society.”
The NUJ FCT Council reiterated its commitment to fostering inclusive and grassroots-driven journalism, while positioning young people as key stakeholders in the future of the media industry.
