The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, have reaffirmed their commitment to closer collaboration in strengthening peace and security in Abuja.
This followed a courtesy visit on Tuesday by the NUJ leadership to the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller Dantawaye, at the Command Headquarters.
Speaking during the visit, NUJ FCT Chairman, Ms. Grace Ike, said the Council deemed it important to formally welcome the Commissioner and reiterate its readiness to work closely with the police in promoting transparency, responsible journalism, and public safety in the nation’s capital.
“We are here not just to say welcome, but to reaffirm our support for a working relationship that promotes transparency, responsible journalism, and security in the FCT,” she said. “The NUJ recognises the critical role the Nigeria Police Force plays in maintaining peace, security and the rule of law.”
Ike stressed that journalists must be free to operate without fear of intimidation or harassment, either online or offline, adding that while the union defends press freedom, it also promotes ethical and accountable journalism to curb misinformation.
“A strong partnership between the media and the police will strengthen public trust and safeguard our democracy,” she noted.
Responding, CP Dantawaye commended the NUJ for the visit and acknowledged the critical role of the media in shaping public perception and supporting security efforts.
“We need you more than you need us,” he said. “Your reportage can project our efforts, and it can also criticise us when necessary. That is why synergy is not optional it is a necessity.”
He urged journalists to support ongoing police sensitisation efforts, especially on encouraging residents to obey traffic laws, register their vehicles, and avoid needless confrontations with law enforcement.
The Commissioner also announced improved rapid-response strategies aimed at curbing criminal activities across the FCT, particularly ‘one-chance’ syndicates.
“Our response time has improved significantly. We aim to respond to distress calls within five minutes whenever possible. We have dismantled four one-chance syndicates already, and we are determined to keep the momentum,” he stated.
Dantawaye encouraged Abuja residents to take responsibility for collective security by providing timely intelligence to the police.
“We are not magicians. Everyone in Abuja must become a partner in policing. If you see something, say something,” he added.
The CP also pledged enhanced information sharing and proactive communication by the Command during emergencies to curb misinformation and reduce the need for rejoinders.
He assured that his administration would maintain an open-door policy and deepen engagement with the media.
“When you invite us, we will come. When we invite you, please join us. Our faces should be seen at each other’s programmes. Security agencies and journalists must work hand in hand,” he said.
Senior police officers present included Lawrence Iwodi, Zanna K. Maidugu, Lamudo Alkali, and the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh.
