The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of one of its members, Mr. Sunday Olatuyi, who was killed in a road accident at the Lugbe Bus Stop, Abuja.
According to a statement signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, and the Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Olatuyi died on Saturday night, December 20, 2025, after being hit by a Toyota Corolla with registration number ABUJA RBC 128 AM, allegedly driven recklessly while he was returning home from work. He was said to be in the company of a friend at the time of the incident.
The statement noted that the tragic incident has once again highlighted the growing culture of reckless driving and disregard for human lives on roads within the Federal Capital Territory, which the union described as unacceptable.
Late Olatuyi, aged 40, hailed from Odo-Oro Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State. He is survived by his wife, a seven-month-old daughter, Eniola, and his aged mother.
Until his death, he worked as a Senior Cameraman with Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN Television) and had previously served with Ben TV. The NUJ described him as a dedicated professional and active union member whose contributions to journalism will be deeply missed.
The NUJ FCT Council called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant authorities to conduct an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the incident and ensure the prosecution of the driver involved, stressing that justice must be seen to be done.
The union also extended its condolences to Olatuyi’s family, ADBN Television, the Correspondents’ Chapel, the Society of Practicing Cameramen, and colleagues in the media industry, assured them of its solidarity and commitment to following the case to a just conclusion.
