The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has entered into a partnership with the Rotary Club of Abuja Maitama to advance humanitarian causes, strengthen ethical leadership, and amplify the global fight against polio.
The collaboration was announced during a courtesy visit by the Rotary delegation to the NUJ FCT Secretariat in Abuja.
President of the Rotary Club of Abuja Maitama, Rotarian Maha Longe, said both institutions share values of service, truth, and integrity.
“Where Rotary seeks to illuminate communities through service projects, journalism seeks to illuminate society through truth and information,” she noted. “We believe that together, we can achieve far more than we can apart.”
Longe highlighted possible areas of synergy such as media visibility for Rotary’s community service initiatives, joint seminars on tackling misinformation and promoting ethics in public service, and collaborative grassroots projects.
Members of the Rotary delegation included Winny Foneka, Anthonia Unigwe, Past Assistant Governor Annmarie Adamu, Kazeem Abdulrahim, Helen Fawoye, Victoria Bassey, Winny Ogebor, Paul Adiwu, and Munirat Bello.
Welcoming the partnership, the Chairperson of NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike commended Rotary’s contributions to health, education, clean water, and sanitation, stressed that journalism and Rotary shared a common commitment to public good.
“NUJ FCT is willing to partner with Rotary to promote and project your activities. Our role is to amplify voices, and that is where we come in,” she said. “Journalism itself is a form of humanitarian service, and we are proud to align with your mission.”
Rotarian Longe also urged the media to sustain public awareness on Rotary International’s flagship project the fight against polio which she said is 99.9 percent eradicated globally.
“That remaining 0.1% is the challenge,” she emphasized. “As long as one child anywhere is carrying the virus, every child everywhere is at risk. This is where we need your voices the most.”
Both parties pledged to sustain the partnership, particularly in public sensitization and grassroots outreach.
