The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Mr. Yakubu Mohammed, a renowned journalist and co-founder of the iconic Newswatch magazine.
In a condolence statement issued on Wednesday, the NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, said the union received the news of Mohammed’s passing with profound sadness, describing him as a towering figure whose courage and professionalism helped shape modern journalism in Nigeria.
Comrade Yahya noted that as a co-founder of Newswatch magazine, the late Mohammed played a historic role in entrenching editorial independence, rigorous investigative reporting, and ethical journalism, particularly during critical periods in the nation’s political history.
“Yakubu Mohammed was far more than a journalist; he was an institution,” the NUJ President said. “His unwavering commitment to truth, integrity, and investigative journalism set enduring standards for the Nigerian media.”
According to the union, Mohammed’s influence extended beyond the newsroom, as he was widely respected as a public intellectual and mentor who nurtured generations of journalists, many of whom continue to draw inspiration from his principles and dedication to the profession.
The NUJ conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the Mohammed family, the management and former staff of Newswatch magazine, and the entire Nigerian media community, describing his death as an irreparable loss to journalism and the nation at large.
The union also prayed for the repose of his soul and for strength and comfort for his family, colleagues, and loved ones as they mourn his passing.
