The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Benue State Secretariat has refuted a report by Sahara Reporters alleging that Corps Members serving in Jato Aka Turan, Kwande Local Government Area, were in panic following an attack by armed herdsmen.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 19th February 2025, the NYSC Benue State Coordinator, Mrs. Veronica Garba, reassured the public that all Corps Members in the state were safe. She emphasized that since the beginning of attacks on Mbaa Community, which shares a boundary with Cameroon, NYSC had withdrawn all Corps Members from the area and had not posted any there since.
She further disclosed that upon reading the report, the Kwande Local Government Inspector (LGI) was immediately directed to conduct a headcount of all Corps Members in the LGA. The verification exercise confirmed that all Corps Members were accounted for and safe.
“Jato Aka Turan, where Corps Members are currently serving, is far from the affected community, and there is no security threat to them,” the statement clarified.
The NYSC assured parents and guardians that it remained committed to the safety and welfare of Corps Members, working closely with security agencies and community leaders to ensure their protection. The public was urged to rely on official NYSC channels for accurate updates regarding Corps Members’ security.
